Palm Trees & Tacos!

Laguna Beach, Venice, Abbot Kinney, Santa Barbara, Lipstick, Tacos, Natural, Mexican FoodThere are a few places I've lived that have felt more like home than others. In 2006, I moved to Laguna Beach - yes, where the T.V show was made. At first, it wasn't something I was too excited about. Having lived in some big cities, it was daunting to think about moving to a town with only a few main streets. And then there was the driving, a home away from home in a car.

Yet, I had also never lived anywhere sunny. Sure, Vancouver had its sunny days, London did as well, and NYC had lots. But that first year in Laguna, everyday was sunny except for 10 days of rain! I felt like a new person, re-discovering the outdoors, the ocean, and even hunkering down on a Sunday morning to watch a movie...guilt free, regardless of the sunny weather beckoning through the windows. Something else was new while living in Laguna, and that something was the discovery of Mexican Food and Tacos.

Having just returned from an extended trip to the lab that included some account visits in Santa Barbara, L.A, & Orange County, here are a few of my fav's //

Santa Barbara: La Super-Rica Taqueria. Get ready to roll up your sleeves for this one. This is true Mexican food at its core, and if you leave here without eating a Tamale, you will regret it. Don't forget the Chili's stuffed with cheese too. Very, very yummy.

Venice: Axe (pronounced a-shay), is more in reference to the "Palm Trees" portion of the title. This little restaurant in Venice on Abbot Kinney has been around for a while, and is always nice to return to, especially for lunch. Try one of their "rice bowls", topped with seasonal local produce and a choice of organic protein (wild salmon please).

Newport Beach: Bear Flag Fish Co. This one is a new favorite and dishes out some of the best tacos I've ever had in California. What I also love about this place is the quality of the seafood, and that they follow sustainable fishing policies which help educate their customers.

Laguna Beach: Taco Loco. My old haunt after a day on the beach, these Tacos are crazy good, and offer a wide variety of choices. Give the Calamari Quesadilla a go for something different, and extra guacamole is a must!
