It took several chemists and many samples to reach the vision I had in mind. The trial and error process was similar to a roller coaster ride, where the obstacles presenting themselves made me wonder if what I wanted was even possible?

The vision was simple, but it was important that each step carried a level of ethical responsibility, one that included all parts in the making of this product. From the packaging, to the origin of pure ingredients, each phase was analyzed and investigated down to its roots while monitored through all stages of production.

I became quite familiar with the Environmental Working Group‘s database, which acts as an online encyclopedia for ingredients found in cosmetics. The range of products listed continue to be a great help in designing ILIA’s non-toxic, organic formulas.

Choosing a name was interesting and fell into the family tree. At the turn of the last century, my Great Grandfather Ilia, designed exclusive shoe styles for women in Europe under the boutique name, Paris Fashion Shoe House - tres chic indeed. He had a knack for trends, taste and amazing detail, something I had to consider repeatedly while embarking on this new path. Ilia also took the time to nurture each client relationship, a value I believe is of the utmost importance. Through his inspiration the spirit of ILIA lives on.

As the French would say, there is a slight double entendre (second meaning) to the name. “Il y a” in French translates to “there is,” which can further itself to “what there is, there is.” A saying I’ve also found beautiful in its purity.

Striving for a pure product, led to the signing of The Compact for Safe Cosmetics; an organization that supports the global production of safe health and beauty products for women, consumers and the environment. In January 2011, ILIA Cosmetics Inc. joined over 1,100 companies in making this commitment.

I now know that a natural cosmetic brand can be filled with organic goodness, packaged with class, and perform above the rest. I hope to inspire those who have been looking for something similar, and believe in the possibility of something better.
